Q & A with Ellen Kuras after the film

Filmed over 23 years, THE BETRAYAL is the directorial debut of renowned cinematographer Ellen Kuras in a remarkable collaboration with the film's subject and co-director Thavisouk Phrasavath. During the Vietnam War, the United States government waged its own secret war in the neighboring country of Laos. When the U.S. withdrew, thousands of Laotians who fought alongside American forces were left behind to face imprisonment or execution. One family, the Phrasavaths, made the courageous decision to escape to America. Hoping to find safety, they discovered a different war. Epic in scope yet devastatingly intimate, featuring an exquisite score by Academy Award winning composer Howard Shore, THE BETRAYAL is a testament to the resilient bonds of family and an astonishing tale of survival.

Ellen Kuras was first widely recognized for her cinematography on Tom Kalin's SWOON, which earned her the Cinematography Prize at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival. She has won that award an unprecendented three times, next for her work on Rebecca Miller's film ANGELA in 1995 and Miller's PERSONAL VELOCITY in 2002. She has shot multiple films for directors like Spike Lee (4 LITTLE GIRLS, BAMBOOZLED, SUMMER OF SAM) and Michel Gondry (ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, BE KIND REWIND) and is one of the few women cinematographers hired to shoot studio pictures, working on films like ANALYZE THAT and THE MOD SQUAD. THE BETRAYAL is her directorial debut and was nominated for the Best Documentary Oscar in 2009.

  1. I tried to get tickets, but unless you are an AFS "Filmmaker" or higher member, you can't get tickets, apparently.

  2. I attended the Ellen Kuras lecture yesterday for the Master Class and she was amazing!!

As a person, she is really easy to talk to and as a cinematographer all I can say is WOW!! The way she thinks about the camera and the shots is really interesting. Something that I really liked about her was the way she thinks about film as a whole.

She is a strong believer of always innovating, and trying new things. She is not a great fan of the conventional, but for good reasons. Well, I don't want to say that she does things completely outside of the norm, but she plays around a lot with different elements.

Kuras, loves to be more experimental, and for her every shot has a meaning, and like she said, that is why she loves to be cinematographer. For her every shot, serves the purpose to inform the audience about the kind of relationships the characters have. And also, what are they trying to say.

Something that for her was really important was her documentary background. She said that the reason why docs have been so important to her is because they have made her grow more as a cinematographer. "Whenever you are doing a documentary you try to capture as much as possible with little resources, and every shot counts, because you don't get seconds...and that is something that I have taken with me by heart. For me everything counts and everything has a meaning. "

Unfortunately, I she did not talked so much about her documentary, because of time. Like I said, she was a great person and she try to say and talk as much as possible. I love when guess speakers try to really inform you and tell you as much as they can, because that really shows their passion and commitment for what they do.
